Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a relatively new digital technique that has transformed the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Prior to the development of BIM, the AEC industry regularly faced problems with high cost, slow delivery, unplanned setbacks, and a lack of communication between teams.
BIM helps reduce or even eliminate those problems entirely, and as such is a fast-growing technique in technical industries around the world.
It has seen major uptake in the UK and US over the last decade, but in many ways was pioneered in the Middle East. As the technology continues to develop, we will continue to see expansion of this method across the world, but will the Middle East continue to be an industry leader in the field?

BIM is a holistic process of creating and managing information about a construction project, creating a single source of information that anyone on any team can use. First, a digital model is created of the asset across all stages of its lifecycle, from initial design, to procurement, construction, maintenance, and refurbishment. That information can then be stored, tracked, and monitored, to ensure optimised performance, integrity, or cost-efficiency, depending on the structure in question.
While the concept has existed in its infancy in the aerospace and aviation industries since the 1970's, advances in digital technology have brought the technique, and the industries it helps, to the cutting edge of design.
BIM ensures that appropriate information is created or captured throughout the entire process, so that accurate decisions can be made at any time. BIM can capture the physical specifications of the build, time management information, cost projections, and facility management data. Far more reliable than traditional methods, BIM has made a huge impact on the construction industry.

One issue is that while many firms want to start using BIM in their construction, there isn't a globally recognised benchmark that BIM is held too. This means that not everyone uses the technology in the same way, to the same standard.
While governments around the world have recognised the inefficiencies in construction, and called for greater uptake of BIM to combat falling productivity, there is still a long way to go.
There is an opportunity for the middle east to lead the way in creating a unified accepted set of standards, techniques, and practices for BIM. In 2014 Dubai mandated that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.united-bim.com/leading-countries-with-bim-adoption/">BIM must be used in large projects</a>&nbsp;of 40 storeys or more, or 300,000 square feet and higher. Due to the clear benefits of BIM in terms of economics and efficiency, we may see more countries pushing for increased uptake of the technique in the coming years.

BIM requires a specific set of skills, training, and practical ability. Not everyone in the industry is equipped to provide it, and competition is fierce for those that are.
Many technical workers and&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.v-hr.com/blog/the-skills-needed-to-work-as-a-technical-contractor">engineers are learning new skills</a>&nbsp;to work in BIM, as every industry becomes more reliant on digital tools, engineers who know how to create digital models will be far more employable. Retaining Talent in the Construction Industry

The construction industry is one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://gocontractor.com/blog/how-does-construction-impact-the-environment/">biggest polluters on the planet</a>, contributing to 23% of air pollution, 40% of drinking water pollution and 50% of landfill waste around the globe. The United Nations Environment Program states that the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-10/temperatures-rise-in-europe-as-another-heat-wave-blankets-region">global construction industry produces 39% of gross carbon emissions yearly</a>. This includes emissions from the production of construction materials, the energy consumed during construction, and the energy used by the buildings themselves over their lifetime, so it&rsquo;s clear the problem exists across the entire construction process.
If the industry is going to reach net-zero, it will need to make drastic changes.
<h2>What does reaching net-zero mean?</h2>
Net-zero is the target of balancing the production of greenhouse gasses throughout a construction project, by finding ways to reduce emissions and absorb any created, leaving the overall environmental impact at zero.
Finding this balance in the construction industry is difficult, given the use of tools and machinery, as well as the production of building and site materials.
Any route for the industry to transition to net-zero emissions will require radical thinking, beginning with accurate measurements of all carbon sources in order to understand the scale of the issue, and where best to make reductions.

Given the widespread uptake of renewable energy, there is now more choice in how projects are powered. Solar power can be easily integrated into projects, powering generators to save on fossil fuels, and is commonly used for lighting towers and other elements of the construction site.

5 Ways Construction Can Meet Net-Zero

he engineering sector is facing a difficult skills shortage, even in the Middle East where the industry has been steadily growing over the last decade. This growth is actually part of the problem, as there is now more competition for skilled engineers than ever before, meaning smaller companies are struggling to recruit while larger companies can afford inflated salaries, hiring many of the best workers.
A staggering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/2022/05/19/uae-jobs-engineering-and-tech-employers-struggling-to-find-right-candidates-to-fill-roles/">93% of engineering firms in the UAE struggled to find qualified engineering candidates</a>&nbsp;in 2021. So what can be done? And what does the skills shortage have to do with changing technology?

Contracting &amp; Construction has been growing throughout the Middle East for a long time, so one would think there would have likewise been a rise in the number of engineers.
But as construction engineering continues to grow, with projects becoming larger, grander, more ambitious, the industry just hasn&rsquo;t been able to keep up with demand, meaning qualified engineers are becoming more precious.
&nbsp;To make things worse, as the world has become more connected, and demand for engineers has risen world-wide, engineers have also moved from their home countries, further depleting the talent pool.
&nbsp;Furthermore, as the Middle East as a whole is beginning to move away from fossil fuel extraction and refinement in an effort to become more diversified and sustainable, engineers who haven&rsquo;t retrained or up-skilled to work with new technologies are finding work more precarious. The shift towards contracting &amp; construction engineering projects has left many engineers uncertain whether to continue with their career paths.
And lastly, an industry focus on technology is leaving the human aspect of engineering undeveloped.

This is not to say that engineering degrees or training courses aren&rsquo;t valuable, but that there needs to be a greater focus on taking that knowledge and applying it in practical ways that keep up with current and evolving best practices. Engineering firms can build that bridge, and help encourage and nurture the next generation of engineering talent. &nbsp;
Furthermore, a reliance on technology like drones is pushing more engineers out of the industry. While no machine can yet replace the knowledge and understanding and experience an engineer brings to the table, there&rsquo;s no denying that technology is fast encroaching on what human workers can accomplish. Nowhere is this more obvious than AI.

&nbsp;Artificial intelligence will begin to become more common in industries around the world over the next decade, but especially in engineering, where it can improve efficiency, cut down on wasted materials, and deliver projects faster.

There is still a future for engineers, but firms needs to ensure they are making that future as attractive as possible.

<h3>Recruit and train graduates</h3>
&nbsp;Some engineering companies are only focused on the latest project, and don&rsquo;t have time to recruit and train graduates who don&rsquo;t have years of experience. They want engineers who are able to walk onto a site and help move the project closer to completion. While this is understandable, it doesn&rsquo;t solve the larger problem of the skills crisis.
From the same study mentioned earlier, over 40% of engineering employers in the UAE said that applicants lacked crucial work experience and necessary technical skills. But new engineers won&rsquo;t gain work experience or technical skills if they aren&rsquo;t given the opportunity to learn on the job.&nbsp;
If engineering companies want more qualified, experienced workers, they need to start recruiting graduates, and commit the time and expense to train them. In the long-term, this will alleviate some of the pressures caused by the skills shortage, creating a larger pool of talent to draw from.
Younger engineers, with the latest training and knowledge, can help up-skill older employees who aren&rsquo;t necessarily able to go back to university.

&nbsp;One of the best ways engineering firms in the Middle East can combat the skills shortage is to up-skill workers to be able to compete in today&rsquo;s marketplace.

The construction sector has been going from strength to strength in the Middle East, and shows no sign of slowing down.
Of course, it&rsquo;s not just the buildings themselves, it&rsquo;s also the energy supply, infrastructure, and transport that is making the Middle East a power house when it comes to civil engineering. But civil engineering is growing all over the world.

&nbsp;The Middle East is championing this, seeking to diversify their energy use across more sustainable sources. Saudi Arabia launched a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.smart-energy.com/policy-regulation/saudi-arabia-launches-28-billion-renewable-energy-funding-initiative/">$28 billion renewable energy funding initiative</a>&nbsp;to become less dependent on oil. The government offers loans for clean energy projects, and supports manufacturers of components used in renewable energy generation.
These loans go as high as 1.2 billion riyals, even for companies that are foreign-owned, showing the commitment behind the initiative is real.
Engineers looking to work in the Middle East will need experience with renewables, and may find exciting new projects in the sector in the coming years thanks to this type of government support.

The use of drones, robots, and VR in engineering will increase rapidly over the next decade.

Please note – The concept of IR35 status for tax and national insurance is not changing, but how the IR35 status determination decision is made and how the rules applicable to that status are then applied is changing.
